Choosing Lab Created Diamonds For Engagement Rings

What are lab created Diamonds? If you want your questions about lab grown diamonds answered, start reading now.
April 30, 2022 Bridal, Diamonds Josephs Jewelry

If you want your questions about Lab-Created Diamonds answered, start reading now. What are lab-Grown Diamonds? Are they real? How are they made? Are they as durable as natural (earth-mined) Diamonds? Are they less expensive than natural Diamonds?

Our previous blog post was on Diamonds because Diamond is the birthstone for April. Don’t forget to check out that blog.

In that blog, you learn that Diamonds are the most durable and strongest gem.

“They are made of one mineral, carbon. They are made 100 miles beneath the Earth’s surface under great pressure and heat. They take years to make and are usually sent up to the surface by a volcanic eruption. Lab-Created Diamonds are not mined but they are put through a process that produces a real Diamond.“

Lab-Grown Diamonds Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Lab-Created Diamond?

A Lab-Grown Diamond is a stone that is chemically, physically, and optically the same as those mined underground. The difference is they are grown in a lab rather than deep within the Earth. Just like natural (earth-mined) Diamonds, they are made of carbon and put under extreme pressure and heat. They display the same brightness and durability as natural (earth-mined) Diamonds.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real?

YES! Unlike cubic zirconia, a synthetic, and moissanite, simulant, Lab-Created Diamonds have the same properties as natural (earth-mined) Diamonds. They have the same score on the Mohs Scale for hardness. Which means they are as durable as natural (earth-mined) Diamonds. Lab-Created Diamonds also display the same fire, sparkle, shimmer, and radiance as natural (earth-mined) Diamonds.

Can a Jeweler tell a Lab-Created Diamond?

Most jewelers do not have the equipment necessary to tell the difference between a Lab-Grown Diamond. Because a Lab-Created Diamond is 100% identical to earth-mined Diamonds it usually takes a trained geologist with high-powered equipment to tell the difference. It is not possible to see the difference with the human eye or a jeweler’s loupe.

Many Lab-Grown Diamonds are Inscribed as Such

Since it’s difficult to identify a Diamond as Lab-Created, many are laser-inscribed across the broadest part of the stone, known as the girdle. These stones have both a laser etching and a report from the Diamond manufacturer. While some Lab-Grown Diamonds have been sold as natural, reputable manufacturers clearly disclose that the stone is manufactured.

How do Lab-Created Diamonds compare to natural (earth-mined) Diamonds?

Natural (earth-mined) and Lab-Created Diamonds are 100% identical in properties. One was created beneath the Earth; the other was created in a lab. Natural Diamonds are mined. Mining is not environmentally friendly. Almost 6000 lbs of mineral waste is created for every carat of Diamond that is mined and nearly 100 sq ft. of land is disturbed. Lab-Grown Diamonds are environmentally friendly. They carry a much smaller carbon footprint, use little energy in the process and emit only small amounts of dangerous emissions.

What are Lab-Created Diamonds Called?

Sometimes they are referred to as synthetic Diamonds. Synthetic refers to the fact that they are formed through a chemical process by human agency instead of those of natural origin (dictionary.com). Although the natural source of Diamonds comes from deep within the Earth, Lab-Grown Diamonds were created in a lab using the same chemical composition (carbon) and the same process. They are not fake or similar. They are identical to natural (earth-mined) Diamonds.

Are Lab-Created Diamonds Valuable?

Most natural (earth-mined) Diamonds have a resale value. So do Lab-Grown Diamonds. If you are looking for an investment, all Diamonds lose much of their value the moment you walk out the door. Many jewelers have perpetuated the idea that Lab-Created Diamonds do not have any resale value. These jewelers are the same ones who try to convince you that buying Diamonds is a good investment. The value of natural (earth-mined) Diamonds drops between 30% and 70% the minute you walk out the door after purchasing them at a retail store.

Are Trumiracle Diamonds Lab-Grown?

Trumiracle Diamonds are sold in department stores like Macy’s and JCPenney. According to the US Patent and Trademark Office (https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/search), Trumiracle is a trademark of Rosy Blue Inc. CORPORATION NEW YORK 529 Fifth Avenue, 12th Floor New York NEW YORK 10017. According to the Rosy Blue website, https://www.rosyblue.com/, they do manufacture Diamonds, although they don’t specifically talk about the Trumiracle Diamonds as such. Other than that, not much information about the Diamonds is available online. Some notations said they were in the G-J color range and clarity was a 13, the lowest rating and that inclusions may be seen with the naked eye.

Are Agape Diamonds Lab-Created?

Diamond Simulant is “A man-made single crystal, which can be manufactured with different materials and designed to simulate the appearance, but not duplicate the characteristic properties of a natural gemstone.” A Lab-Created Diamond is a duplicate and has the same chemical makeup and properties of a natural gemstone.

Are Brilliant Earth Diamonds Lab-Created?

Brilliant Earth has both Natural (Earth-Mined) Diamonds and Lab-Created Diamonds. Brilliant Earth started with the intent of building a business by going beyond Conflict-Free Diamonds, environmentally friendly processes, a small carbon footprint, and sustainability. Their Lab-Grown Diamonds are available in various colorless varieties and fancy colors. Their Lab-Created Diamonds are certified, graded, and sustainably rated.

Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Turn Yellow?

Since Lab-Grown Diamonds have the same chemical makeup and physical characteristics as natural (earth-mined) Diamonds, they are exactly like (earth-mined) Diamonds. They will not turn yellow, they will last forever, they will not get cloudy, and the color and clarity will not change over time. If a Lab-Created Diamond fades, it is because it is cheap and has been overexposed to UV light. One of the reasons to buy a Lab-Grown Diamond from a reputable dealer and to get the certification is to make sure you are purchasing a quality stone.

Are Lab-Created Diamonds Cheaper?

Yes. Lab-Created Diamonds are 40% to 50% cheaper than natural (earth-mined) Diamonds. Lab-Grown Diamonds are created in less time at lower cost than Diamonds that are mined. They are also more ethical than mined Diamonds. Lab-Created Diamonds, like natural (earth-mined) Diamonds, can be insured.
