What You Want to Pay Attention to When Buying Gold Jewelry
What is a Karat?
A “carat” is a unit used to measure the weight for diamonds and gemstones. A “karat”, when referring to gold, is a unit of gold purity. 24-karat gold is pure gold, however lower karats are mixed with other metals like alloy, silver, or copper. 24-karat gold is the softest of all the gold karats because it is pure gold. Adding other metals add to the jewelry’s strength.
“Karat” originated from a German gold coin called a mark, which was extremely common a thousand years ago. A mark weighed 24 carats (4.8 grams), and pure gold. The term stuck around, and is recognized globally.
What are Karat Weights?
- 24-karat: 24 parts gold + 0 added metals
- 22-karat: 22 parts gold + 2 parts added metals
- 18-karat: 18 parts gold + 6 parts added metals
- 14-karat: 14 parts gold + 10 parts added metals
- 10-karat: 10 parts gold + 14 parts added metals
If a piece of jewelry is made of 18 parts gold + 6 parts copper= 18-karat rose gold.
